Women We Love: Kerry Washington
Kerry Washington is taking the world by storm. In 2014 she was deemed one of the most influential people in the world, and we can see why. She has worked with dozens of charitable causes from early on in her career and continues to do so to this day. Most of them have to do with women, domestic violence, and the arts! These are all things dear to our hearts and she is doing so much good in this world. Go Kerry! Some of her work includes being a member of the President’s Committee of the Arts and Humanities, a board member for V-day–a charity against violence for women, a board member of the Creative Coalition for the arts, and on the Artists Committee for Americans for the Arts. Here she works with youth in DC on the Turnaround Arts Initiative.
She goes beyond education, youth, and violence, and has used her unique and fabulous style to raise money and awareness for not only domestic violence, but the frequent financial strain that those in domestically violent environments cannot afford to get away from. Last year, Ms. Washington joined with The Allstate Foundation Purple Purse and fashion designers to create a purple handbag representing women’s financial independence and to raise awareness for women’s violence.
Washington says, “Abuse is hard to talk about, so we thought a purse is a beautiful object that can get the conversation started…it is a symbol of a woman’s financial domain.”
